North Carolina plate format rules

- 1–8 characters.
- Allowed characters
- Letters A–Z, numbers 0–9, and “&”, “#”, “+”, “$”, “/”, “=”, “*”, “?”, “@”, “'”, “-”, “,”, “!”, “:”, “.”.
Eight *spaces* on the plate, not eight characters: full-space symbols (&, #, +, $, /, =, *, ?, @) take one space each while half-space symbols (apostrophe, dash, comma, !, :, .) take half, so a combination using them can legitimately exceed 8 typed characters — this dataset counts every character as one. Double quotes, which take two spaces, are omitted from the charset. Half-space characters are not allowed on motorcycle plates, which cap at 7.
