New Mexico personalized & vanity plates

What New Mexico lets you spell on a plate, and how to check availability yourself.

Plate Gator can't check New Mexico availability automatically

New Mexico checks availability only inside an order wizard that first verifies a real New Mexico vehicle registration, so this state must be checked by hand by the vehicle's owner.

So the only way to know for sure is to ask New Mexico directly — the preview above still works, but Plate Gator will not run a live check for New Mexico.

New Mexico plate format rules

Length
1–8 characters.
Allowed characters
Letters A–Z and numbers 0–9 only.

New Mexico calls these Prestige Plates and allows alphanumerics only. The maximum varies by background: Turquoise 1 to 8, Yellow 1 to 7, Chile 1 to 6, with lower motorcycle variants. The Zia symbol, hashtag, asterisk, dash, underscore and space are all explicitly disallowed, and a plate may not duplicate an existing one or falsely imply official status.
