What Montana lets you spell on a plate, and how to check availability yourself.
Plate Gator can't check Montana availability automatically
Montana has no online availability tool; personalized plates are requested on paper Form MV8.
So the only way to know for sure is to ask Montana directly — the preview above still works, but Plate Gator will not run a live check for Montana.
Montana plate format rules
- Length
- 2–7 characters.
- Allowed characters
- Letters A–Z, numbers 0–9, and spaces, “&”.
- Letters
- Must contain at least one letter (no all-number combinations).
- Not issued
- Plates containing “O”.
At least two alphanumeric characters, max 7 on the standard passenger plate (sponsor and college 6, military 4 to 6, disabled 5 to 6). A combination cannot be all spaces or all numbers, the letter O is not allowed (numeral 0 is substituted), and spaces count as full characters that may not lead or trail. From the official MV8 application form; the space character is inferred from that form's own space-handling rules.
